- In 1902, to reflect Newton Heath's fresh start & new Circumstances, it was decided to choose a new name.Various opinions were considered including Manchester Celtic & Manchester Central.
Finally the directors agreed on a new name that had a distinguished ring to it. At a board meeting one of the directors , an Italian immigrant, Louis Rocca said "Gentlemen, why don't we call ourselves Manchester United?", all liked the name & on 26 April 1902, Manchester United came into existence.
As part of the Club's new image, they also switched to a smart new strip: Red Shirts & White Shorts...
(Over the next decades Louis Rocca became chief Scout under Matt Busby, But for millions of people all over the world his main legacy will always be the 2 most famous words in Club Football : Manchester United)
